Job Description

AECOM Buildings + Places Boston/New England’s architectural practice includes aviation, transit, research/science, higher education and federal/state/local government projects.  It recently was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as second in 2025 revenue among Massachusetts firms. It is a dynamic, fast-paced design environment, client-focused and collaborative.  We are also a social studio that thrives on in-office and on-site collaboration and teamwork, dedicated to excellence in project delivery. Recent projects are multiple-award winners. We regularly work with other practices on the East Coast and are home to the East Region's architectural design and urban design leaders.

AECOM is seeking a creative, experienced Architect III licensed in a New England state and eligible for reciprocity in other states. In this role they would help solve design and technical issues while leading task teams contributing to project delivery.  Traditionally labelled “Job Captain” in the profession, a person in this role will be involved in project development and deliverables from conceptual studies through full design and construction administration, as well as guiding others to follow best practices in the same. As part of diverse teams, this role will help organize and execute business development efforts, meet client goals, and ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards, in coordination with Project Managers, Lead Designers, Principals, BIM Leaders, QA/QC reviewers and other practice leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leads, organizes and produces architectural drawing and specification sets across SD, DD, CD, and CA phases, meeting client/design/firm goals and deadlines
  • Applies industry knowledge and a thorough understanding of concepts, codes, systems, principles and technical capabilities to solving issues, with senior staff support as needed
  • Has a strong commitment to meeting responsibilities, plus a positive, helpful outlook and ideas to contribute to a team
  • Possesses strong skills acquired through advanced training, study and experience
  • Professionally licensed in architecture or actively pursuing licensure
  • Under the direction of the Supervising Architect / Designer, completes assigned work independently and receives/applies general guidance and direction on new projects, tasks and priorities
  • Analyzes issues and identifies solutions using existing techniques, and proposes approaches for novel issues
  • Coordinates the work with other disciplines and other departments participating in an assigned project
  • Exercises independent judgement in determining how work is performed; review and approve design direction as required
  • Proactively identifies and advocates for improvements to existing processes and procedures
  • Exchanges information on sensitive matters and works to build consensus across teams and departments
  • Understands stakeholders by anticipating their needs and ensures work results will have positive impact
  • Adapts to new processes or changing assignments, and considers alternative approaches to complete work
  • Supports development of concepts and text descriptions for proposals/business development
  • Provides guidance and training to junior team members, and proactively reports to project managers, principals, and lead designers.
  • Report to the Lead PM and Principal

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture and 4 years of experience in Architecture or demonstrated equivalency of education and/or experience
  • Active Massachusetts Registered Architect (RA) license or one held in another New England state (NH, VT, ME, CT, RI)

Preferred Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident due to the nature of our projects
  • 5+ years of Architecture experience
  • Experience in aviation, transportation, infrastructure, higher education, lab/science and/or Federal architectural projects
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and organize architectural drawing sets across SD, DD, CD, and CA phases
  • Experience in coordination and package completion on complex architectural projects.
  • NCARB Certification and LEED Accreditation
  • Proficiency in Revit, Enscape and other BIM tools, Procore/Newforma/PMWeb and similar, Bluebeam, Adobe Creative Suite, and graphic communications
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with all
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; adaptable to various audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail
  • Graphic skills and proficiency with software for wayfinding and signage
