Hardware & Semiconductor Engineering

Product Design Engineering Intern: our view in 3 lines...

  • The Role:This internship is for a mechanical or product design engineering student working on consumer augmented reality products.
  • The Person:The person will brainstorm concepts, design mechanical modules, create CAD models and drawings, prototype and test designs, troubleshoot issues, validate requirements, and work with engineers and suppliers to make designs manufacturable.
  • Requirements:The ideal candidate is studying mechanical engineering, mechatronics, aero/astro engineering, or product design engineering and has 3D CAD software experience, testing and evaluating mechanical designs, rapid prototyping methods, mass production manufacturing methods, and material properties for plastics and metals.

About the role

As an engineering intern on the AR Product Design Engineering team, you will help design solutions for next generation consumer augmented reality products. You will explore and refine a range of designs through iterative prototyping and collaboration, developing a thorough understanding of the product design process, manufacturing, and validation.

Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long.

Responsibilities

  • Brainstorming innovative ideas and defining requirements balancing performance, comfort, and aesthetics.
  • Design mechanical modules and systems including but not limited to enclosures, thermal solutions, dynamic components, etc.
  • Detail 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD software.
  • Perform engineering analysis of design functionality including but not limited to free body diagrams, weight analysis, tolerance analysis, and statistical analysis.
  • Rapidly prototype designs using 3D printing, CNC, and other fabrication techniques.
  • Identify and resolve issues by troubleshooting and iterating on design.
  • Validate design intent and functional requirements through data driven testing and analysis.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, optical engineers, manufacturing engineers, reliability engineers, industrial engineers, and more to integrate hardware systems.
  • Partner with suppliers to ensure design is manufacturable at scale.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Bachelors or Masters in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, aero/astro engineering, product design engineering, or related field
  • Experience using 3D CAD software such as solidworks, Creo, NX, CATIA
  • Proficiency in testing & evaluating mechanical designs
  • Knowledge of various rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC, laser cutting)
  • Familiarity with mass production manufacturing methods such as injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, and CNC
  • Fundamental knowledge of material properties for plastics and metals
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with simulation analysis (structural, thermal simulation tools)
  • Specific 3D CAD experience using Siemens NX
  • Experience in consumer electronic product design field
