Hardware Validation Engineer, Networking and Signal Integrity, Platforms: our view in 3 lines...
- The Role: An engineer who validates and qualifies networking hardware and high-speed interfaces for large-scale data center platforms.
- The Person: Plan and execute electrical, functional, and signal integrity tests on networking hardware, collect and analyze lab data, validate PCIe and Ethernet interfaces, and report issues with corrective actions to cross-functional teams.
- Requirements: Bachelor’s degree, experience with electrical, functional and system-level testing, scripting and automation, scopes, bit error rate testers (BERTs), protocol analyzers, PCI Express debugging, and signal integrity knowledge.
Job Description
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 2 years of experience working on boards and systems, doing electrical, functional and system-level testing, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's degree in Electrical, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
- Experience using scripting and automation to execute test algorithms, and then analyze results.
- Experience with lab equipment like scopes, bit error rate testers (BERTs), and analyzers.
- Experience in running and debugging the PCI Express protocol for root complexes and endpoints.
- Knowledge of signal integrity, especially for high speed interfaces, and best practices to collect accurate signal integrity data.
About the job:
As a hardware validation engineer, you will qualify networking hardware like switches, smart-network interface cards, custom cables, and other specialized hardware for Google's data centers. Google's custom-designed machines make up computing infrastructures in the world. The hardware validation team ensures that this equipment operates properly electrically, functions as intended, meets quality requirements, and exhibits the level of reliability expected by customers. You will work within our lab environments, planning for and executing the required testing. Working with design engineers, you will give inputs on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality, reliability, and security. Our Platforms Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds the
hardware and software technologies that power all of Google's services. Our computational challenges are complex and unique, enabled by cutting-edge custom hardware designed and made in-house. As a hardware engineer, you will design and build the systems that are the heart of the world's largest and most powerful computing infrastructure. You will see those systems from concept all the way through to high-volume manufacturing. Your work has the potential to shape the machinery that goes into our cutting-edge data centers, affecting millions of Google users.
Responsibilities:
- Create test plans and coordinate resources across test environments.
- Perform electrical, functional, and signal integrity testing for Google's networking equipment and other data center hardware solutions. Analyze results to ensure that they meet Google's requirements.
- Use scopes, protocol analyzers, bit error rate testers (BERTs), and other lab equipment to collect data. Organize data and incorporate learnings to maintain and improve the qualification process.
- Validate interfaces like Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) Gen 5/6, Ethernet, and inter-chip interconnects.
- Communicate status updates to cross-functional teams and leadership. Report bugs and deliver corrective action where needed with external suppliers and internal development teams.
