  • The Role: Develop and improve catastrophe model vulnerability components for wind and hail perils within an impact forecasting team serving insurance and reinsurance clients.
  • The Person: Develop, test and implement damage/vulnerability components for Severe Convective Storm models, manage loss data collection, coordinate wind damage assessments, and communicate findings with clients and partners.
  • Requirements: University degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, strong analytical and programming skills (Matlab, Python, R), working knowledge of Building Design Standards, vulnerability assessment methods, and statistical data analysis and SQL.

Job Description

We are currently looking for a new colleague for Structural/Civil (hail, wind) Engineer, a role within our Impact Forecasting team, subsidiary of Aon, based in Prague office. The global IF team of 180 members based in 5 offices around the world (Prague, London, Chicago, Singapore and Bangalore) consists of scientists and software developers dedicated to developing catastrophe models and risk management solutions for various natural and human-made perils including Wind storm, Severe Convective Storm, Flood, Earthquake, Terrorism and others. What the day will look like Develop and improve the damage/vulnerability component of catastrophe models, starting with Severe Convective Storm Manage loss data collection from insurance and reinsurance companies for model calibration Coordinate wind damage assessments and related technical activities Communicate with clients, internal teams across offices, and academic partners Represent Aon at commercial, academic, and marketing events Share knowledge and educate colleagues on alternative damage modelling techniques Develop, test and implement ideas to improve the performance of the vulnerability component of the Severe Convective Storm Catastrophe model Skills and experiences that will lead to success University degree in Civil / Structural Engineering (or related field) Strong analytical and programming skills (Matlab, Python, R) Working knowledge of Building Design Standards Knowledge of vulnerability assessment methods and tools to develop damage/vulnerability curves Understanding of statistical data analysis methods Strong presentation and communication skills Ability to simplifying complex concepts It helps if you bring some of the following You’re comfortable applying probability and statistics to real structural‑engineering problems, and ideally you’ve had exposure to hail and wind engineering. You may have a research background and experience building or enhancing catastrophe models for the insurance industry, and you’re happy writing simple SQL queries to work with data.
