Job Description

About us

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Every day, our colleagues support scientific discoveries, healthcare innovations, and life-changing therapies that positively impact millions of people worldwide. With more than 125,000 employees globally, we combine innovation, collaboration, and expertise to help our customers solve some of the world's most important challenges.

Our Brno site is home to a diverse international engineering community working on sophisticated technologies and products used by customers around the world.

About the Role

As a Senior Cost & Value Engineer – Mechanical, you'll join our growing Technical Sourcing Engineering (TSE) organization in Brno, working as part of an international team.

You'll combine mechanical engineering and manufacturing expertise with Cost & Value Engineering to improve the value of our existing products. The role brings together hands-on engineering, should-cost thinking and technical supplier collaboration, giving you the opportunity to influence product design and manufacturing while delivering measurable cost improvements.

Why Join Our Brno Team?

This is an opportunity to join a growing Cost & Value Engineering capability in Brno and help shape how we approach technical value creation across our products.

You'll have significant exposure to an international engineering organisation, global stakeholders and suppliers, while working on projects where your engineering decisions can deliver visible and measurable results.

The role is particularly suited to an experienced engineer who wants to broaden their impact beyond traditional product design and apply their technical expertise to manufacturing, product cost, supplier collaboration and Value Engineering.

What You'll Do & How You'll Make an Impact

  • Identify and develop cost-reduction and Value Engineering opportunities across existing products

  • Analyse mechanical designs, manufacturing processes and cost drivers to understand what components should cost and where engineering can create additional value

  • Redesign mechanical components and assemblies, using CAD and DFM/DFA/DFx principles to improve manufacturability, cost and product value

  • Work across machined parts, sheet metal and mechanical assemblies, connecting design decisions with manufacturing processes and their cost implications

  • Apply a should-cost mindset, considering materials, manufacturing processes, labour, tooling and other cost drivers when evaluating designs and supplier solutions

  • Build and maintain strong technical relationships with suppliers, collaborating with their engineering and manufacturing teams to identify and implement improvements

  • Visit suppliers and lead or participate in technical and Value Engineering workshops to explore alternative designs, materials and manufacturing approaches

  • Lead opportunities through discovery and feasibility and support projects through implementation

  • Partner closely with R&D and Category Management, presenting recommendations and influencing stakeholders without direct authority

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline

  • Strong experience in mechanical product design, development or manufacturing, with hands-on design experience and confidence working with CAD

  • Experience with mechanical components and manufacturing processes such as machining/CNC, sheet metal and mechanical assemblies

  • Experience with Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VA/VE or VAVE) and DFM/DFA/DFx methodologies

  • Good understanding of should-cost principles and manufacturing cost drivers – hands-on expertise with specific costing tools is not required

  • Experience working directly with suppliers or manufacturing partners and building strong technical relationships

  • Evidence of delivering cost, manufacturability or product-value improvements through engineering decisions

  • Strong problem-solving, communication and stakeholder-influencing skills, with the ability to work independently in an international environment

  • Professional working proficiency in English and willingness to travel approximately 20% globally for supplier/customer visits, workshops and project activities

  • Experience with SolidWorks is welcome, but strong experience with another advanced CAD platform is equally relevant.

  • We're open to experienced engineers from any sector where you've developed strong product design, manufacturing and supplier expertise.

Nice to Have

  • Hands-on should-cost modelling or experience with dedicated costing tools

  • Design-to-Cost or product cost optimisation experience

  • Supplier development or supplier cost-reduction experience

  • Product qualification or validation experience

  • Experience within a regulated product environment

  • Medical-device or scientific-instrumentation experience

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package with yearly bonus

  • 5 weeks of vacation

  • 5 paid sick/personal days

  • Pension contribution

  • Multisport Card

  • Life and risk insurance

  • Meal allowance

  • Preferential mobile tariff

  • Anniversary Award Program

  • Patent Award Program

  • Learning and development opportunities within an international engineering organisation

  • Exposure to suppliers, technologies and technical experts across Europe and beyond

  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that helps make the world healthier, cleaner and safer

Ready to Make an Impact?

If you bring strong mechanical and manufacturing expertise, understand how engineering decisions influence cost, and enjoy working collaboratively with suppliers and global teams, this could be an excellent next step in your career.
