Engineering Lead.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and growth-focused Functional Manager to lead our Engineering Team. This role blends technical excellence with people leadership—empowering engineers through mentorship, skill-building, and standardized best practices—while also contributing directly to high-impact technical work.

You will drive backend development, ensure quality across all projects, assist with architecture and coding for complex initiatives, and help shape the long-term craft direction within the organization. A portion of your time (25–50%) will be dedicated to hands-on development of our internal products, such as Teifi Bridge and Teifi Parts, as well as private apps and utilities not yet part of Teifi Labs until they are incubated and transitioned to a dedicated team. You will also help identify intellectual property (IP) that can be productized for broader market use.

Key Responsibilities

People Management & Mentorship

• Manage, mentor, and train a team of backend engineers across Canada 
• Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning.
• Foster a collaborative culture across distributed teams in different time zones.
• Lead hiring efforts for senior/lead backend developers, focusing on technical capability and cultural fit.

Resource Planning & Team Operations

• Own resource planning and project staffing across backend initiatives.
• Work with the Director of Operations to ensure proper allocation of backend resources between client projects, internal products, and incubation initiatives.
• Balance workload between migration projects, support requests, new development, and IP/product incubation.
• Refine operational processes to improve team scalability and performance.

Project & Delivery Management

• Coordinate with Project Managers on sprint planning and delivery timelines.
• Lead daily standups and sprint planning with the backend team.
• Support backlog grooming and remove blockers for the backend engineering team.
• Collaborate with Project Management on roadmap planning.

Technical Leadership & Quality Assurance

• Maintain backend engineering standards and code quality practices.
• Perform code reviews and approve technical solutions for complex integrations.
• Contribute directly to architecture design and coding for challenging technical problems.
• Drive continuous improvement in team processes and technical practices.
• Establish clear escalation paths for production issues and critical bugs.
• Manage escalations and critical production issues.
• Coordinate with frontend teams and other stakeholders for seamless delivery.

Product Development & IP Identification

• Contribute to the development of internal products such as Teifi Bridge, Teifi Parts, and private utilities.
• Help identify and validate intellectual property opportunities that can be transformed into market-ready products.
• Work closely with product leadership to move incubated projects toward dedicated Teifi Labs teams when ready.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of full-stack development experience, including architectural leadership.
• Deep understanding of Shopify ecosystem including:
  Liquid, HTML, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+)
• Shopify Theme development and customization to latest standards
  Shopify App development (private/public) using Node.js, React, TypeScript
  GraphQL API, REST API, Webhooks, Shopify Functions & Metafields
• Experience building modern frontends using Remix, Hydrogen, and React Server Components
• Proficiency with CSS frameworks like Tailwind CSS, Flexbox, Grid, and SCSS
• Solid experience in Node.js and backend frameworks such as Express.js, Koa.js, or Nest.js
• Familiarity with Git workflows, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines
• Strong command of performance optimization, Core Web Vitals, and debugging techniques
• Ability to collaborate directly with stakeholders, clients, and cross-functional teams
• Strong English communication skills
