Position Summary
The Research Associate plays a central role in advancing the lab’s research and publication activities, contributing directly to proposal development, project reporting, and dissemination of research outcomes. Core responsibilities include drafting and coordinating research proposals, grant applications, technical progress reports, and journal manuscripts, as well as supporting graduate students in publication and thesis preparation.
The Research Associate also manages the compilation of the annual research report, oversees project documentation related to budgeting and ethics, and presents research findings in professional and academic forums. These tasks require strong technical writing, analytical, and coordination skills, combined with a deep understanding of engineering research methods and publication standards.
Operating under the overall guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) and within the frameworks of institutional and funding agency policies (e.g., NSERC guidelines), the Research Associate exercises significant independence in daily operations. While strategic direction and key milestones are defined by the PI, the role demands professional judgment to adapt established procedures to specific research contexts.
The position involves direct engagement in the NSERC Alliance program with Imperial Oil Ltd. and potential involvement in other projects as proposals progress. Through effective coordination, proposal leadership, and mentoring, the Research Associate contributes substantially to maintaining the lab’s research excellence, securing external funding, and enhancing the University of Alberta’s national and industrial partnerships in mining and industrial engineering research
