About the Role
Passed the FE exam and ready to put your degree to work? Westex Consulting Engineers, an established engineering firm in Reno, is adding a Civil/Geotechnical Engineer-in-Training to its team.
This role is built for a recent graduate or early-career engineer who wants real geotechnical experience, not just desk time. You'll split your week between project sites and the office, learning directly from seasoned Professional Engineers and project managers while you log the qualifying experience you need for your PE license.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carry out field investigations, including soil sampling, site evaluations, and in-situ testing.
- Support construction observation and testing for earthwork, foundations, and site development.
- Gather, review, and interpret geotechnical and geologic data.
- Help run engineering calculations and analyses for foundations, grading, earthwork, and slope stability.
- Write field reports, technical memos, and sections of geotechnical reports.
- Check that construction work follows project plans, specifications, and engineering recommendations.
- Schedule and coordinate field and laboratory testing of soils and construction materials.
- Contribute to proposals, scopes of work, cost estimates, and project planning.
- Keep thorough field notes, test records, and project files.
- Work day to day with project managers, PEs, contractors, clients, and field staff, following all applicable codes, standards, and safety practices.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
- A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- EIT certification, or the ability to complete EIT registration.
- Working knowledge of soil mechanics, civil engineering fundamentals, and construction practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings, plans, and specifications.
- Solid analytical and organizational skills, with clear written and verbal communication.
- Readiness to work both on active job sites and in the office, and to travel to local projects.
- A valid driver's license.
Nice to Have
- Internship, co-op, or project experience in geotechnical engineering, construction, soils, or materials testing.
- Hands-on exposure to soil sampling, compaction testing, construction observation, or field inspection.
- Experience with AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
- Familiarity with geotechnical software such as GeoStudio or PLAXIS.
- Knowledge of ASTM test methods or construction materials testing procedures.
Don't have field or construction experience yet? That's fine. You'll get plenty of it here.
Is This You?
You're curious, dependable, and technically sharp. You're just as comfortable in boots on a job site as you are at a desk working through calculations, and you want a role that will actually develop you as an engineer. If you've recently passed the FE and that sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.
Compensation
$60,000–$70,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
