About the role
Location: LaVergne, TN (southeast of Nashville)
Job Type: Full-Time, onsite
At Coats, we design, build, and support the technologies and machines that keep automotive shops running. Our portfolio includes tire changers, wheel balancers, aligners, lifts, inspection systems, and compressed air solutions, all engineered for safety, durability, and real-world productivity.
We’re hiring a mid-level Software Engineer to develop the embedded software that runs our automotive service equipment. This is hands-on work: your code will control motors, read sensors, and communicate with hardware on machines you can walk up to and test. You’ll work closely with our hardware, electrical, and manufacturing teams across the full development lifecycle, from requirements and design through coding, testing, debugging, and field support.
This is not a web or cloud-only role. We’re looking for engineers who have shipped software that runs on, and talks to, physical machines.
- Design, develop, debug, and test embedded firmware and software for automotive service machines such as tire changers and wheel balancers
- Interface software with machine hardware, including sensors, actuators, motor controllers, and other control systems
- Test and troubleshoot directly on machines, on the shop floor and in the lab
- Collaborate with electrical, hardware, and manufacturing engineers to define requirements and resolve system-level issues
- Participate in code reviews, test planning, and deployment of new features
- Ensure software meets performance, reliability, and safety standards
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an accredited university
- 2-6 years of professional experience developing embedded software for machines, instruments, or other hardware-based systems
- Hands-on experience interfacing software with hardware, such as sensors, motor control, or communication protocols (e.g., serial, CAN, SPI, I²C, Modbus, USB)
- Proficiency in C# / .NET and Visual Studio
- Strong object-oriented programming and software design skills
- Experience with Git and bug-tracking tools (Atlassian/Jira a plus)
- Ability to work independently and own features through the full software lifecycle
- Comfort with hands-on debugging using lab tools (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, multimeter, etc.)
- C / C++ proficiency
- Linux or Android experience
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial equipment environment
- .NET MAUI / Xamarin Forms and MVVM
- Customer-facing UI/UX experience for machine interfaces
- Azure or AWS experience for connected-equipment features
