Battery Product Design Engineer: our view in 3 lines...
- The Role:This role is for an engineer designing and integrating battery systems for VR and AR devices, wearables, and smart glasses.
- The Person:The person will define battery pack architecture, lead cell evaluation and validation, drive cross-functional integration, manage safety risks, and shape battery technology roadmaps.
- Requirements:The ideal candidate has 8+ years of experience in battery pack design and product engineering, lithium-ion cell electrochemical performance, battery system validation, and consumer electronics regulatory standards.
About the role
Meta Reality Labs is seeking a Battery Product Design Engineer to lead the end-to-end design and integration of battery systems for next-generation virtual and augmented reality devices, including headsets, wearables, and smart glasses. In this role, you will own the technical strategy and execution for battery cell selection, pack architecture, and safety system design across Meta's Reality Labs hardware portfolio, driving innovations in energy density, thermal management, and mechanical integration within the highly constrained form factors of consumer wearable devices.
- Define and own the battery pack architecture and system-level design strategy for VR/AR headsets and wearable devices, including cell selection, pack topology, protection circuitry, and mechanical integration
- Lead cell evaluation and qualification programs — characterize electrochemical performance, abuse tolerance, cycle life, and calendar aging across candidate cell chemistries and form factors
- Drive cross-functional execution with mechanical, electrical, thermal, firmware, and safety engineering teams to integrate battery systems into wearable product designs from concept through mass production
- Establish and own battery system requirements — energy capacity, power delivery, thermal limits, swelling tolerances, and safety thresholds — and ensure traceability through design validation
- Lead design failure mode and effects analysis for battery packs and protection systems, and own resolution of safety-critical design risks across the product development cycle
- Collaborate with contract manufacturers and cell suppliers to define manufacturing process requirements, incoming quality controls, and production test specifications for battery pack assembly
- Develop and execute battery validation plans including electrical characterization, mechanical abuse, thermal runaway propagation, and regulatory compliance testing for consumer electronics standards
- Translate field reliability data and failure analysis findings into design improvements and feed insights back into next-generation battery product architecture
- Shape long-term battery technology roadmaps by evaluating emerging cell chemistries, form factors, and packaging innovations relevant to wearable and spatial computing devices
- Mentor other engineers on battery design methodology, raise the technical bar across the team, and influence engineering direction at the organizational level
- 8+ years of experience in battery pack design and product engineering for consumer electronics, wearables, or portable devices, including cell selection, pack architecture, and protection system design
- Experience characterizing lithium-ion cell electrochemical performance, degradation behavior, and abuse response, and applying those findings to product design decisions
- Experience leading battery system validation programs including electrical, mechanical, thermal, and safety testing against consumer electronics regulatory standards
- Experience driving cross-functional battery integration programs across mechanical, electrical, thermal, and manufacturing engineering teams from early concept through mass production
- Experience communicating battery system design decisions, trade-offs, and risk assessments in writing to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders
- Familiarity with battery management system IC integration, protection circuit design, and fuel gauge configuration in space-constrained consumer hardware
- Background in battery safety standards and regulatory certification processes for consumer electronics, including UN 38.3, IEC 62133, or UL 2054
- Experience with thermal modeling and simulation tools applied to battery pack thermal management in wearable or handheld devices
- Experience with emerging cell chemistries or form factors such as solid-state, semi-solid, or prismatic cells relevant to wearable device applications
