Research Engineer, CAD: our view in 3 lines...
- The Role:This role is for an engineer who builds mathematical software for geometry and computer-aided design tools.
- The Person:The person will automate matching and validation of 3D models against 2D drawings, contribute to core geometry libraries, and eventually take ownership of a toolpath computation engine.
- Requirements:The ideal candidate has strong mathematics and computational geometry fundamentals, exposure to low-level software work or graphics and 3D modelling tools, and 2 to 8 years of relevant experience.
About the role
About the company
Our client is a manufacturing company.
The role
Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Research-focused engineer who builds geometry and CAD software, automating checks between 3D models and 2D drawings. The role grows into owning a core software subsystem end to end, working alongside a technical lead on hard computational problems.
What you'll do
- Automate the matching and validation of 3D models against their 2D drawings.
- Contribute to core geometry libraries and internal design tooling.
- Extend and eventually take ownership of a toolpath computation engine.
- Explore unresolved questions in geometric algorithms and design software.
- Become the expert on one core subsystem and own it from design through long-term maintenance.
- Work closely with the technical lead and engineering team to apply mathematical software work to physical production.
Requirements
What we're looking for
- Strong mathematics and computational geometry fundamentals.
- Exposure to low-level software work, such as embedded code or firmware, or to graphics and 3D modelling tools.
- Hands-on understanding of how hardware and operating systems execute code, valued over general web development.
- Capacity to work through demanding questions in shape modelling and machine path calculation.
- Comfort tackling loosely defined problems where the tools and scope are still being chosen.
- Ability to drive a subsystem from investigation through implementation.
- Openness to becoming the team's most knowledgeable person on one component of the codebase.
- Ability to connect rigorous theory with practical outcomes in manufacturing.
- 2 to 8 years of relevant experience.
Bonus points
- Math competition experience at a national or international level.
- Prior academic research during undergraduate studies in a quantitative discipline.
- Machine learning or computer graphics experience.
- Background in self-driving systems work on demanding, loosely scoped engineering questions.
- Production geometry or toolpath software experience.
- Experience at a semiconductor or other deep-technical hardware company.
