Customer success and technical account management help organisations get lasting value from the technology they buy. These roles connect a technology provider with its customers, helping them introduce a product, use it effectively and overcome barriers to achieving their goals. Customer success usually focuses on the customer’s overall objectives and experience, while technical account management provides more detailed guidance on how the technology fits into their systems and operations.
Customer success managers work with customers to understand what they want to achieve and agree a plan for getting there. This can involve coordinating onboarding, arranging training and helping different teams adopt relevant product features. They monitor engagement, discuss progress and identify problems that could prevent a customer from seeing value. Depending on the organisation, they may also support contract renewals and identify opportunities for customers to expand their use of the product.
Technical account managers combine relationship management with a strong understanding of the product and its technical environment. They may advise on integrations, configuration, performance and operational reliability, working closely with support and engineering teams when specialist input is needed. For example, a technical account manager might help a customer plan an integration with an existing business system or coordinate the response to a recurring technical issue. The role often involves translating technical detail into clear explanations for different audiences.
Jobs in this category include customer success manager, customer success engineer, technical account manager and customer onboarding specialist. The balance between commercial, technical and relationship responsibilities varies by employer, and some positions combine several of these areas. Strong communication, problem-solving and product knowledge are central to the work, along with the ability to understand customer priorities and turn them into practical next steps.
