Graphic design, motion graphics, brand design
Creative and visual design is allied to, rather than separate from, good user interface work. Working in creative and visual design could mean working for an in-house brand team or digital agency or at a product company with dedicated creative functions. What’s expected from a creative or visual designer will vary depending on the organisation.
In the digital sphere, graphic design roles typically require strong skills in layout, typography and visual communication. Most roles will expect proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, whereas work in motion graphics commonly requires knowledge of After Effects and Cinema 4D. Motion graphics is increasingly valuable as teams are producing more video content, social assets and product animation.
When looking at a more senior level, design focuses on maintaining a coherent visual identity across different touchpoints, and making sure this adheres to a clear and defined set of expectations. This often requires close collaboration with marketing and product teams, as well as external agencies. Positions at this level require more than just craft skills, but also need a strategic approach that blends brand values with coherent design systems and guidelines.
Although less crucial for in-house roles, freelancers and contractors will find a portfolio is essential. For permanent roles, hiring managers are looking for proof you can operate well within teams, contribute to creative processes and adapt work to changing organisational objectives.
