Digital strategy, transformation consultants, innovation
You’re likely to find digital transformation and strategy roles in organisations and sectors that are focused on modernising their operations, technology and customer propositions. What the roles look like in practice varies considerably, whether that’s a consultancy engagement where consultants are parachuted in to define and kick off a transformation programme, or a permanent leadership position that oversees an organisational change across many years.
These roles are generally at the senior end, and typically require a blend of strategic thinking and credibility of delivery. You have to be able to diagnose the barriers that exist within an organisation and its technology, while also advocating for the necessary change by building a strong business case, and then leading complex cross-functional programmes. This needs the experience of working with senior stakeholders, managing programme governance and negotiating internal politics, as well as the necessary technical knowledge.
There is also a wealth of digital strategy roles that sit within consultancy or advisory functions. These involve market analysis, operating model design, and the development of strategic roadmaps, and generally benefit from sector-specific experience, especially in heavily regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare and the public sector. Regulatory and operational contexts shape what any transformation will look like in practice, so bringing this industry knowledge is key.
Titles in this space include Head of Digital Transformation, Digital Strategy Director, Chief Digital Officer, and Transformation Consultant, and the skills profile is broad. Tailor your position carefully to reflect your skills and experience. Are you good at defining strategy, leading delivery, or both?
