E-commerce specialists, marketplace management, digital merchandising
From straightforwardly ecommerce business to multichannel retailers, marketplace operators and brands building or scaling their online presence, roles in ecommerce and digital retail are in strong demand. Organisations are increasingly investing in their direct-to-consumer channels, as well as the technology and operations behind them.
Ecommerce management roles focus on the commercial performance of digital retail channels, and cover product listings, pricing, promotional strategy, and the customer journey from acquisition through to conversion and retention. Platform experience is often a key requirement, with Shopify, Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and BigCommerce appearing regularly in job descriptions. Familiarity with the specific capabilities and limitations of a given platform can enable hiring managers to differentiate stronger or more suitable candidates.
Marketplace management roles focus on the operation of third-party channels such as Amazon, eBay, ASOS Marketplace or other sector-specific platforms. These positions require an understanding of marketplace algorithms, listing optimisation, inventory management, as well as the commercial dynamics of selling within a platform that also competes with its sellers.
Digital merchandising roles focus on how products are presented and surfaced online. This includes category management, search and navigation optimisation, and the use of personalisation tools to improve relevance for different customer segments. More technical ecommerce roles can veer into product management or solutions architecture, particularly at organisations building custom commerce infrastructure or integrating complex fulfilment and inventory systems.
