For those looking for a position that blends finance, technology and business operations, financial systems and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) roles could be the answer. Hiring is consistently taking place across large organisations, whether they’re undergoing full system implementations, upgrades or carrying out ongoing platform management.
Given that SAP and Oracle dominate this space, it’s all but essential to have experience with one or both platforms. The depth of specialism varies, however, with some positions focused on functional configuration and process design within modules like finance, procurement or supply chain, while others ask for technical skills in areas such as development or system administration. In addition to SAP and Oracle, many roles will require a familiarity with NetSuite, which is growing in popularity among mid-market and scale-up organisations.
There is always a market for experienced consultants and programme managers able to handle large-scale deployments, and ERP implementation and project roles are most likely to appear in volume during major system programmes. This means it’s important to be able to manage the business change aspects of an ERP programme, not just the technical delivery side, and this is what marks out the strongest senior candidates.
Outside of major project activity, you could be looking at roles like financial systems analyst or administrator. These focus on the day-to-day operation, optimisation and user support of finance platforms, and represent a more stable hiring pattern which isn’t connected to major projects.
