Whether it’s challenger banks, payment processors, embedded finance providers or the digital arms of established financial institutions, fintech and payments roles are always being actively hired. It’s even more beneficial if you can bring domain-specific experience along with technical skills for these positions.
This sector is always changing, having to deal with open banking, stablecoin development and the expansion of embedded finance, which means that staying up to date with the regulatory and technological landscape is an essential part of the job.
Tech roles in the payment space cover a wide range of activities, from engineering payment processing infrastructure and API integration to product roles that optimise checkout flow, fraud reduction or cross-border payment processes. Depending on the level and nature of the role, you may be expected to have experience in Visa, Mastercard, SWIFT, SEPA, Open Banking, and ISO 20022. For many payments engineering positions, you will be expected to have experience with PCI DSS compliance as a baseline requirement.
Many of these roles within fintech will be a mix of financial services knowledge and digital product experience. As you get to a more senior level, you will be expected to understand how regulated financial products are designed, approved, and brought to market, alongside having a familiarity with the FCA regulatory framework in the UK or equivalent bodies in other markets.
