Technical project managers, Scrum masters, delivery managers
Project and programme management roles are in constant demand in all areas of the digital sector, with hiring managers seeking people who can keep complex work moving. Whether you operate in an Agile, waterfall or hybrid environment, what matters is delivering outcomes against time, budget and scope.
Technical project managers bridge the gap between straightforward delivery management and technical understanding, and are often sought by engineering and product organisations. Organisations that run product teams are more likely to hire Scrum Masters and Agile coaches, and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) experience is increasingly valuable in larger businesses undergoing Agile transformation.
Digital agencies and government digital teams are more likely to hire delivery managers, a role that operates with a more light-touch facilitation style. These focus on removing blockers and enabling teams to work autonomously.
At a senior level, programme managers co-ordinate across multiple interdependent workstreams, manage relationships with senior stakeholders and ensure that a strategic alignment between delivery and business objectives is maintained. It’s expected that applicants at this level will be experienced in programme governance, risk management and benefits realisation.
Although tangible delivery experience is often considered more important than formal certifications, job descriptions in this area often reference PRINCE2, APM PMQ, PMP, and various Scrum and SAFe qualifications.
