Content and social media are central to most organisations’ digital marketing strategies and offer a wide range of positions at all levels, from channel-specific execution to editorial leadership. Positions can be found across agencies, brands, media companies and in-house teams, reflecting the importance of this discipline to all sorts of businesses.

Content creation covers a lot of different bases, with some roles focusing on written output for web, email and long-form formats, while other roles specialise in video, audio or social-first content. Whatever your specialism, strong candidates blend creativity and an understanding of performance. Knowing the fundamentals of SEO, audience engagement metrics and the best practice standards that apply to different platforms will help you stand out as a candidate.

Social media platforms are constantly changing their algorithms, standards and the overall dynamics of the platform, so it’s essential to maintain up-to-date knowledge of how these work, whether that’s Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok or X, among others. It’s important to have experience of community management, paid social and scheduling and analytics tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite or Later, but job descriptions also want applicants to understand the importance of tone of voice and brand consistency, especially for in-house roles.

As you move higher on the ladder, senior roles like Head of Content and Content Strategy focus less on production and more on building and overseeing the content operation, making decisions about what and why the organisation is doing with their content. They define the direction of editorial content, manage teams and external contributors, decide performance metrics and align content investment to business outcomes. Being able to prove an ability to grow audiences and drive measurable commercial impact via content is valuable at this level.
